MAIR 2026 keynote: Dr. Kollin Napier, Director of the Mississippi Artificial Intelligence Network (MAIN), delivered the keynote for the 2026 Mississippi Association for Institutional Research (MAIR) Conference on the theme Capitalizing on Data.

His talk, The MAIN Model for AI and Higher Education, asked a direct question: what does it mean to capitalize on data in the age of AI? Leaders can access analytics today. However, many still struggle to turn insights into action. That gap comes from coordination, governance, and follow-through.

MAIR 2026 keynote: From dashboards to decisions

Higher education has more data than ever. Still, teams often use it for reporting instead of improvement. AI raises the stakes even more. It speeds up analysis and raises expectations. Therefore, institutional research leaders now guide both data quality and algorithmic influence.

Accountability also keeps shifting toward workforce and earnings outcomes. As a result, IR teams must link program data to labor-market signals. They must also support leaders with clear, timely recommendations.

MAIR 2026 keynote: Why statewide coordination matters

Mississippi’s 2-year and 4-year ecosystem shares labor markets. Students also move across institutions. So, isolated solutions fall short. We need shared infrastructure. We also need shared definitions, shared governance, and shared measurement.

During the MAIR 2026 keynote, we discussed what coordinated infrastructure looks like in practice. We focused on governance, workforce-data integration, and strategic analytics alignment. We also discussed how MAIN supports responsible AI adoption across higher education.

Next steps for institutional research and MAIN

Thank you to MAIR for the invitation and for the work MAIR members lead across Mississippi. Ultimately, dashboards do not define the future. Action does. When we align data, governance, and goals, we can improve outcomes at scale.
