Dr. Kollin Napier, Director of the Mississippi Artificial Intelligence Network (MAIN), visited East Central Middle School in Hurley on January 15, 2026. He spent the day with more than 100 eighth-grade Cyber Foundations students in the Jackson County School District. The session focused on AI literacy and responsible technology use.
AI Literacy for Eighth Grade Students
First, students explored how artificial intelligence has evolved over time. They also discussed how generative AI differs from traditional computing.
Additionally, students learned why ethics, critical thinking, and verification are essential skills for navigating an AI-enabled world. These conversations gave students a foundation for understanding both the power and the limits of AI.
During the session, Dr. Napier demonstrated how AI can generate text, images, music, and video. Students reacted with curiosity and strong questions.
Digital Citizenship and Responsible AI Use
As a result, the group explored the limits of AI outputs. They learned why people should critically review AI-generated content before accepting it as accurate.
The discussion also covered how AI is already transforming industries. Students learned about AI applications in cybersecurity, healthcare, manufacturing, and education.
Therefore, building AI literacy now prepares students for the careers and challenges ahead. Responsible and ethical AI practices are not just important for adults. They matter for every student entering today’s workforce.
Career Readiness for Mississippi Students
AI literacy is increasingly essential for career readiness. Workforce and economic changes driven by AI will affect every field. Students who understand AI today are better prepared for tomorrow’s opportunities.
Furthermore, digital citizenship skills help students engage with technology in ways that are informed, ethical, and responsible. MAIN’s work in schools reflects this commitment to preparing Mississippi’s next generation.
