AI leadership Mississippi reached another important milestone in July 2025. Jackson State University hosted its first immersive ChatGPT workshop in partnership with the Mississippi Artificial Intelligence Network (MAIN) and OpenAI Academy. Nearly 500 participants from education, workforce, and government sectors gathered for a full day focused on practical, applied artificial intelligence learning.

The full-day convening gave participants direct exposure to generative AI through hands-on training with OpenAI Academy instructors. Rather than focusing only on theory, the sessions emphasized real-world use cases for ChatGPT that participants could carry back into their own classrooms, offices, and organizations.

This applied format reflected a shared objective across MAIN and JSU: helping Mississippians build practical AI confidence, not just awareness.

Mississippi Cross-Sector Participation Signals Statewide Momentum

What made the workshop especially significant was the range of leaders in the room. Educators, workforce professionals, and public sector representatives learned together in a single environment. That cross-sector collaboration is central to Mississippi’s statewide AI strategy and helps ensure that adoption is aligned across systems instead of happening in isolated pockets.

“As a partner of MAIN, we were excited to collaborate with leaders across the state to host events like this at JSU. Artificial intelligence is reshaping discovery, teaching and workforce development, and it’s critical that our faculty, staff and students are not only prepared but positioned to lead and drive innovation.”

— Almesha Campbell, Ph.D., Vice President for Research and Economic Development, Jackson State University

JSU’s Role in Innovation and Workforce Development

As a proud partner of MAIN, Jackson State University played a central role in hosting and delivering the event. Under Dr. Campbell’s leadership, teams across campus coordinated to create a well-executed, high-impact experience that highlighted JSU’s commitment to applied research, entrepreneurship, and workforce readiness.

This workshop also builds on a broader series of AI and machine learning initiatives at JSU. Earlier in 2025, the university announced a $1.3 million state grant administered by AccelerateMS to advance AI education, workforce development, and entrepreneurship through the Executive On Roster (XOR) initiative.

MAIN and JSU: Building Mississippi’s AI Future from Jackson

MAIN, based at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, is the nation’s first coordinated statewide AI initiative. Established in partnership with Mississippi’s public colleges and universities and supported by leaders including NVIDIA, AWS, and Intel, MAIN expands AI access through free courses, convenings, and practical training opportunities.

“Mississippi is not waiting on the future. We are building it. MAIN is proud to lead this work, and this workshop was more than a milestone. It demonstrated the momentum and unity across our state to equip educators, public officials, and workforce leaders with the tools they need to thrive in the AI era.”

— Kollin Napier, Ph.D., Director, Mississippi Artificial Intelligence Network (MAIN)

From Milestone to Movement

Ultimately, the JSU immersive ChatGPT workshop reflected more than strong turnout. It demonstrated what is possible when higher education institutions, statewide initiatives, and national AI partners align around practical outcomes. Mississippi is not standing on the sidelines of AI transformation. Through partnerships like this, it is actively shaping what comes next.
