Microsoft Copilot training for Mississippi state government staff was the focus of an in-person session led by Dr. Kollin Napier, Director of the Mississippi Artificial Intelligence Network (MAIN).

The session brought together staff from the Mississippi Development Authority and colleagues from across state government. First, participants explored artificial intelligence fundamentals. Then, they examined how Copilot can support professional work in a responsible and practical way.

Microsoft Copilot Training for Public-Sector Work

Dr. Napier introduced Microsoft Copilot as both a standalone tool and a feature within Microsoft 365 applications. The training included examples from Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.

In addition, participants reviewed prompt fundamentals, image generation, data considerations, limitations, and safety. These topics matter because public-sector teams need AI tools that support daily work while respecting policy, privacy, and security expectations.

The goal was simple: help participants leave with a clearer understanding of how Copilot can function as a true co-pilot across the Microsoft ecosystem. Microsoft describes Copilot as an AI assistant that can help with drafting, insights, and productivity. Learn more from Microsoft Copilot for organizations.

Building Practical AI Literacy

The questions and discussion throughout the morning reinforced the importance of practical AI literacy. Furthermore, the session showed why training should be grounded in real workflows, not abstract technology demonstrations.
