An August 2024 South Mississippi Living feature described how Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC), as the host institution for the Mississippi Artificial Intelligence Network (MAIN), helped turn a statewide AI collaboration into practical courses and workforce development.

Original feature: This MAIN source brief summarizes and adds network context to “MGCCC Plays Leading Role in Mississippi’s Statewide AI Initiative” in the August 2024 issue of South Mississippi Living. The magazine credited the story and image to MGCCC.

Key details

How MGCCC supported the statewide initiative

The feature identified professional development and workforce upskilling as central parts of MAIN’s work. MGCCC adapted curriculum based on Intel’s Digital Readiness AI for Workforce program for delivery through Canvas, creating an online route into foundational AI concepts, applications and responsible-use questions.

The course structure included discussion, hands-on activities, ethical considerations and societal impacts. No-code tools allowed participants to practice without first completing programming or computer science prerequisites.

“Empowering the workforce at all levels with AI skills enhances professional growth, fuels innovation, and propels Mississippi’s economic development.”

Dr. Kollin Napier, as quoted in South Mississippi Living

Why the host-institution role mattered

A statewide initiative needs operational infrastructure as well as a shared vision. MGCCC provided a place to host courses, coordinate partner access and connect MAIN’s education goals with workforce delivery. That foundation made it possible for participating institutions to reach their own employees, learners and communities through a common program.

The August 2024 feature captured an early stage of that work. It should be read as a historical account of the initiative’s launch period, not as a current inventory of courses, enrollments or partners.
