MGCCC Bellwether finalist recognition places the college among the nation’s top 10 innovative community college programs and highlights Mississippi’s statewide approach to AI education and workforce readiness.

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC) earned national recognition as a 2026 Bellwether Award finalist for its leadership in developing the Mississippi Artificial Intelligence Network (MAIN), the nation’s first statewide artificial intelligence workforce initiative.

MGCCC received this recognition at the 2026 Community College Futures Assembly in San Antonio, Texas. As a result, MGCCC ranks among the top 10 innovative community college programs in the country. The Bellwether Awards spotlight programs that scale impact through innovation, partnerships, and measurable outcomes.

Why MGCCC Bellwether Finalist Recognition Matters

MAIN shows what happens when a state aligns education and workforce strategy around practical AI skills. It also demonstrates how community colleges can lead statewide transformation. Most importantly, it expands access so more Mississippians can participate in an AI-driven economy.

Launched in 2023 with a $1 million grant from AccelerateMS, MAIN unites all Mississippi public colleges and universities with global technology partners, including Intel, NVIDIA, and Amazon Web Services (AWS). In addition, MAIN provides free, self-paced online courses and supports a growing network of AI labs statewide. To date, MAIN has engaged more than 6,000 workforce learners and 4,000 K–12 educators, helping them build practical AI skills and earn recognized credentials.

Anchored by MGCCC, MAIN expands access across both rural and urban communities. At the same time, it strengthens faculty capacity through efforts such as the NVIDIA Faculty Ambassador Network. MAIN also advances applied learning through the AI Innovation Hub, developed in partnership with AWS and the Mississippi Department of Information Technology Services (ITS).

Dr. Mary S. Graham, MGCCC President, said: “Being named a Bellwether finalist affirms that Mississippi is not just participating in the AI conversation. We are helping lead it. MAIN represents a bold, collaborative strategy to prepare our students, educators, and workforce for the rapidly evolving AI-driven economy.”

Dr. Kollin Napier, Director of MAIN, said: “This national recognition underscores the power of collaboration. MAIN is building a sustainable AI ecosystem for Mississippi. It equips learners with real-world skills, supports faculty and industry engagement, and strengthens economic development.”

MGCCC Bellwether Finalist Impact Across Mississippi

MAIN is not a single program. Instead, it is a coordinated statewide strategy that aligns K–12 education, higher education, workforce training, industry, and public partners. Therefore, Mississippi can compete, adapt, and lead as AI reshapes jobs and education.
