xAI Southaven data center plans mark one of Mississippi’s largest technology and economic development announcements.
Governor Tate Reeves announced that xAI will locate a major data center project in Southaven. xAI is the artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk. According to the Governor’s Office, the project represents more than $20 billion in investment. Officials also expect the project to create hundreds of permanent jobs in DeSoto County.

The company purchased a building for the new operations. Now, xAI is retrofitting the site for data center use. xAI calls the site MACROHARDRR.
In addition, officials said the investment will support public revenue for local needs. Those needs include education, public safety, parks, health services, and other community priorities.
The Mississippi Development Authority approved the project for the state’s Data Center Incentive. Also, local governments support the project through fee-in-lieu agreements.
Why It Matters for Mississippi AI
For MAIN, the xAI Southaven data center announcement matters because AI infrastructure and workforce readiness connect directly. Data centers, compute capacity, energy planning, and responsible AI adoption all shape the state’s AI future.
As AI investment grows, Mississippi will need workers who understand these systems. Therefore, MAIN helps meet that need through free AI courses, statewide partnerships, and the AI Workforce Readiness Council.
